About 20 years ago, the body’s own cannabinoid receptor system (endocannabinoid system) was discovered. This discovery was the starting point for an intensive exploration of the hemp plant for medical purposes.
The cannabis plant cannabis sativa contains a considerable number of so-called phytocannabinoids (approx. 85) from the group of terpene phenols, which so far have not been discovered in any other plant (source: wikipedia with further references). In addition, hemp also contains a variety of non-cannabinoids, over 120 different terpenes and 21 flavonoids (loc.cit.).
The most investigated cannabinoid (loc.cit.) is certainly Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta-9-THC) or just THC. When the term medicinal hemp is used in general language, this discourse basically and essentially refers to the active substance THC.
